PWS is pleased to release a new model of its wireless traffic sensor – the Wireless WxT/G-10, Groundhog.  The WxT/G-10 is a permanent, in-pavement sensor that offers both traffic and weather measurements.  It features enhanced electronics, greater accuracy, and additional pavement weather data.  The WxT/G-10 is easier to maintain than loops and is perfect for areas where permanent traffic data collection is needed.

There is an increasing desire in the transportation industry to obtain accurate traffic information combined with monitoring of pavement temperature and condition using only one pavement sensor.  The WxT/G-10 meets this requirement by providing vehicle speed, length and classification data, and it captures three external temperature readings (lid, pavement and sub-surface) as well as a wet/dry and chemical index measurement.

The WxT/G-10 supports two external sensors and one internal sensor for monitoring pavement temperature.  One sensor detects sub-surface temperature data and is installed 17 inches below the surface.  The second external temperature sensor extends away from the WxT/G-10 canister and is installed just below the surface (conforming to NTCIP guidelines) to capture a true reading of pavement temperature apart from the traffic sensor electronics.  The third pavement temperature sensor is a thermistor located on the lid of the WxT/G-10 canister.  The WxT/G-10 also contains a sensor to measure basic pavement conditions – wet/dry and chemical index.

The WxT/G-10 is able to detect moving vehicles above 8 mph up to 120 mph and has 99% accuracy with respect to vehicle count.  The WxT/G-10 is installed into the road pavement and reports data back to a roadside device.  The sensor can also be integrated with a road weather station (RWIS) to provide valuable weather and traffic information for roadway maintenance operations.  RWIS (Road Weather Information System) technology helps decision-makers by providing near real-time weather and traffic conditions at specified locations.

End.
